Open your app next to a competitor's and the difference isn't a feature. It's a vibe. Their tab bar floats. Their sheets breathe. Yours looks like it belongs on the previous OS. That's Liquid Glass, and in 2026 it isn't a novelty. It's the wallpaper.
Much of the redesign is closer to a recompile than a rewrite. The parts that aren't are the parts small teams underestimate, and Apple is about to remove the last way to avoid them.
What Liquid Glass actually is (short version)
Apple unveiled Liquid Glass at WWDC in June 2025 and shipped it as the default look in iOS 26 on September 15, 2025. It's a design language of translucent, layered materials that respond to what's behind and beneath them: frosted panels that pick up color from your content, controls that morph as they change state, and chrome that gets out of the way when you scroll. It's the biggest visual shift on iOS since iOS 7 flattened everything in 2013, and it reads at a glance.
It's also no longer a minority look. Apple published adoption figures ahead of WWDC 2026 based on App Store activity on June 7, 2026: 79% of all iPhones and 86% of iPhones introduced in the last four years were running iOS 26, with iPadOS 26 at 68% of all iPads. Most of your users have been looking at glass every day for the better part of a year.
The deadline you already passed, and the one coming
Since April 28, 2026, every app or game uploaded to App Store Connect has had to be built with Xcode 26 or later using the iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26, or watchOS 26 SDK. If you've shipped an update since spring, you already crossed that line.
Two things people get wrong about it. First, it's a build toolchain mandate, not a design mandate: your deployment target is still yours, and the new SDK doesn't drop support for older devices. Second, it didn't force anyone into Liquid Glass, because Xcode 26 still honors the UIDesignRequiresCompatibility key in Info.plist. Set it to YES and your app keeps the pre-26 appearance.
Apple always called that key temporary, and it is: the iOS 27 SDK ignores it. iOS 27 was announced at WWDC on June 8, 2026 and is in developer beta now, with a public release expected this fall. Apple hasn't posted a 2027 SDK requirement yet, but it raises that floor on a roughly annual cadence, so plan on spring 2027. The window to do this deliberately is the next two or three quarters, not next year.
The "just recompile" path: what you get for free
If you're on SwiftUI and you've shipped since April, you've already picked up more Liquid Glass than you may realize:
- Tab bars render as translucent glass, shrink on scroll, and expand back when the user reaches for them.
- Sheets and popovers use the new materials, with softer edges and content bleeding through.
- Sidebars and split views pick up the layered look on iPad automatically.
- Toolbars and navigation bars gain the new blur and adapt to what's behind them.
A mostly-standard SwiftUI app that did nothing else looks broadly correct. It just doesn't feel designed for Liquid Glass, and that gap shows next to a competitor.
Where the actual work lives
The recompile handles the standard chrome. Everything with your fingerprints on it — custom cards, custom navigation, custom controls — needs your attention.
1. Custom surfaces need the glass modifiers
SwiftUI gained a glassEffect modifier alongside iOS 26, plus GlassEffectContainer and glassEffectID. The container matters more than most tutorials let on: glass doesn't render correctly on top of other glass, so overlapping shapes need a container to blend and morph them, and glassEffectID preserves a shape's identity across those transitions. For custom cards, floating action buttons, or bespoke sheets, strip the old fills and shadows and let those APIs do the work.
2. Content-forward layouts win
Apple's guidance keeps the material in the navigation layer floating above your content, not spread across it. If your layout was tuned for opaque, boxed-in chrome — heavy backgrounds, hard dividers, dense navigation — the new materials look wrong on top of it. The redesigns that land gave the content more room and let glass do the framing.
3. UIKit apps need surgery, not paint
Standard UIKit navigation and tab bars pick up the new materials on a rebuild, but custom glass surfaces are explicit work: UIGlassEffect applied through a UIVisualEffectView. Any app with a hand-rolled navigation stack, a custom tab bar, or a thick appearance layer will fight the redesign until you untangle it — the same architectural friction we covered in our WWDC 2026 debrief for indie developers.
The recompile makes your app look correct. The redesign makes it look like it was built for this decade.

For most small teams the sweet spot is recompile plus a targeted redesign of the two or three screens users spend the most time on. What iOS 27 changes, and why it isn't a reason to wait
The Liquid Glass news out of WWDC 2026 was refinement, not replacement. Apple adjusted the material's foundations in response to feedback:
- A transparency slider from fully opaque to completely clear, replacing the two-position Clear/Tinted switch iOS 26.1 added.
- Darkened edges and brighter specular highlights that give glass more depth, plus better diffusion of what's behind it so text stays legible over busy content.
- App icons with extra glass layers in the artwork, Apple's answer to the blurry-icon complaints.
None of that changes the APIs you'd write against today. It changes your margin for error: your layout now has to hold up at both ends of that slider.
The mistakes we keep seeing
- Over-glassing. Glass works because it's contrast. When everything is glass, nothing is, and stacked panels destroy your hierarchy.
- Skipping the contrast pass. Text on a translucent surface reads beautifully over your demo screenshot and disastrously over a busy photo the user actually has.
- Forgetting accessibility. Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast are real settings real users turn on, and since iOS 26.1 they can flip the whole system to Tinted. If your design only works in one mode, it's demoed, not shipped.
One more thing while you're in there: screenshots that still show a pre-iOS-26 look are the fastest way to signal "this app is old" to someone comparing three options, so refresh the store listing at the same time — and revisit pricing, because plenty has shifted since we wrote our honest breakdown of Apple's 30% cut.
